Ok, so it's the week of your period, and you're trying to decide what to wear to school this morning. It can be hard to know if what you wear will be comfy, guard against leakage, and not give you a VPL (Visible Pad Line- ew!), so here are some suggestions of what to steer clear of and what works well during that time of the month.
UNDERWEAR
Unless you wear tampons, thongs are not a good option. Pads typically won't stick to a thong, and you will have leakage. When wearing a pad, boyshorts can also be difficult to wear, as many pads with wings don't fit as well into them. I recommend bikini underwear. You should also steer clear of your favorite cute panties, in case of accidents. You can buy cheap underwear from places like Wal-Mart or Target, and keep those handy for that time of the month.
PANTS vs. SKIRTS/DRESSES
When you wear tighter fitting pants, you don't have to worry about pads shifting as much as when you have on a skirt. However, I've successfully worn both without much of a problem. It's really personal preference when it comes to skirts vs. pants. If you wear leggings, make sure whatever you have over them is long enough. Leggings are NOT pants, especially during your menstrual cycle, where the outline of a pad can be seen if you're wearing something too tight or clingy. Take a good look int he mirror before you go out in public, just to be on the safe side.
SHIRTS
Long shirts and tunics, for sure, are something I like to wear during my period. That way, in the unlikely case that I leak through my pants, I have a shirt that will cover my butt until I can change. Severe leaks like that aren't common, but having a long shirt definitely helps me feel less self conscious.

COLORS
You don't have to have to have to wear dark colored pants or skirts during your period, but it does help many girls to feel more confident! If you wear white or other light colors on the bottom, you might be worrying about leaks a lot more. I feel more secure when I wear dark or black jeans and skirts, so I recommend you try that out, especially on the heavier days of your cycle.
I hope these tips helped you out! What do you like to wear during your period? Leave me a comment and let me know!
